Grand Casino Aš – Europe’s Largest Community Casino

The poker scene in Europe is diverse and definitely different from that in the U.S. King’s dominates the market with its million-euro guarantees, but some casinos are also trying to carve out a place for themselves in the international poker world. The Grand Casino Aš is certainly one of them. Its geographical proximity to King’s doesn’t make it any easier to establish itself as a hotspot, but it has found its unique selling point (USP) and established itself as the largest community casino.

What is the poker player looking for? Attractive buy-ins, attractive prize pools, and reasonable overhead costs. They find all of that every weekend at King’s. And yet, less than 100 km away, the GCA has made a name for itself. Like the famous Gallic village, it took on the challenge ten years ago—and succeeded. Credit for this goes to poker manager Sandro Greulich, who, together with his team, has created a community hub. Of course, it’s mainly Germans who keep coming back to the GCA. For Czechs, other casinos are easier to reach, and for all other nationalities, the journey is already somewhat cumbersome. Nevertheless, you regularly encounter Belgians, Poles, and, of course, Austrians and Swiss as well.

The strategy against the “big brother” has paid off. The target audience is recreational players, which is why the APAT (Amateur Poker Association & Tour) is the perfect partner. Anyone looking to win millions goes to King’s anyway. But anyone looking for solid tournament structures at affordable prices and a variety of tournaments in different formats will end up at the GCA. Here, too, you’ll find large fields of participants, as there are already nearly 50 tables available. But the GCA can’t—and doesn’t want to—cater to the masses. The player, as a guest, remains the focus, and entertainment is a central priority. Of course, there are also the masked “don’t-talk-to-me” players here. But they’re the exception. Here, poker entertainment is still alive and well—despite language differences.

The GCA now has annual highlights:

Bounty Hunter Days powered by poker-trip.de

The Bounty Hunter Days and the GCA have grown together. This year, there are five stops—four of which have already been successfully completed. One is still to come in December, and booking numbers for that one are already very strong. The mix of different bounty formats, the variety of one-day and multi-day tournaments, and, of course, great partners like Mayoman and Barista Rebel have made the BHDs an internationally renowned festival series. Together with MeetUp Poker, they also celebrate their love for Crazy Pineapple.

MeetUp Poker

MeetUp Poker was also once just an idea from Michel Ruh. What began as a small festival now exceeds the capacity of the GCA Poker Floor every September. They’ve secured the title of “world’s largest Crazy Pineapple tournament” even without the Guinness Book of World Records. But it’s not just the three-card game that fills the tables. They bring streamers, strategists, and poker enthusiasts to the “MeetUp” at the GCA, turning every festival into an unforgettable experience. And they create fun side games like the Sticker Album, which brings players to the tables like little boys and spreads that Panini album vibe.

GRND Live

Felix “xflixx” Schneiders and his GRND community. This group has also found a home at the GCA. GRND Live XI is coming up in November—with €450,000 in prize money up for grabs. That’s already a large sum for the GCA, but the signs are good that even more will be up for grabs. It’s not just people from Cologne who come to the GRND festivals at the GCA. Here, too, there’s an overlap among the communities—you’ll run into players from the Herzdamen, the MeetUp guys, or even HeyHansi. The GRND community clearly holds the power here.

Herzdamen

The Herzdamen. Every September, the ladies celebrate their “Not-Ladies” Festival with more ladies than anywhere else. You can organize ladies’ events—or you can organize the Herzdamen Festival. The spirit of the Herzdamen—led by founder Mila Monroe—shapes and inspires the German-speaking women’s poker world. The fact that the Herzdamen Festival is a festival for the ladies, but not just a “Ladies” festival, makes it all the more attractive. And so here, too, there’s always a crossover between communities—not just lots of ladies at the tables, but large fields of participants with a huge proportion of women.  This is how “Ladies in Poker” is meant to work.

Baaalief by Jenzoou

The loudest poker streamer after Jens Knossalla. And currently the most successful, too. Jenzoou brings not only his streamer friends but also a massive community. And so the Baaalief Series isn’t just a statement of faith—it’s a poker weekend of a very special kind. The streamers are happy to serve as namesakes and hosts for the various tournaments, thereby providing a unique experience for many players.

Hansimania

For the first time, HeyHansi (aka Jan Wagner) also got his own festival at the GCA. He, too, has a large streaming community and is well-connected in the online world. This, in turn, brings in the community friends of xflixx and others, making this festival another event with a large field of participants.

ÖSOP – Marc Gork’s PLO Festival

The Omaha community is large, but of course not as large as that of NLH players. With the “Ominösen Series of Poker” (ÖSOP for short), however, Marc Gork has established a festival format that brings both PLO and NLH enthusiasts to the tables. If you like Omaha, you’ll find what you’re looking for here. The buy-ins aren’t too high, but the prize pools are lucrative. And running parallel to this is an attractive program for NLH players. This combination ensures full tables at the GCA on a regular basis.

The Clubs & Associations

As already mentioned, the APAT enjoys working with the GCA, because German clubs and associations love the GCA. Since the legal framework in Germany is, to put it mildly, very limited, poker enthusiasts have to look abroad—and they’re welcomed with open arms at the GCA. Isar Poker, Angry Dice, Nuts LivePoker, Kann Kommen e. V., Poker Giants, Poker Liga Nordhessen, Fairgame Poker, Nobelll Poker, Dorfkinder, THC Bochum, Aces Full, Ruhrpott Cup, River Card Club, and certainly a few more have already held their festivals at the GCA. These have ranged from multi-flight events to one-day tournaments, all featuring moderate buy-ins but still offering substantial prize pools. Some have been partners for years; others have joined only recently. But one thing is certain for all of them—they’re happy to come back.

This also applies to international partners. APAT Germany was most recently held in early October, but the European edition, ECOAP, is already scheduled for next spring. The Belgians from Poker Belgique, led by Leandro Gaone, also enjoy coming to the GCA. And rumor has it that there might even be an Italian partner in 2027.

In addition to all the community events, the GCA also hosts its own successful formats, such as the GCA Masters, GCA Poker Festival, Diamond Cup, The Ladder, 50 Grand, Summer Cup, BOOM Festival, GCA Midsummer, The Big Deal, and the GCA Cup, which has already been teased for 2027.

With the opening of the Mondeso Hotel right next to the GCA, even more comfort has been provided for players; however, rooms are often booked well in advance, especially during the festivals. It’s always a good idea to plan early and ask the respective partner about deals. You can also always find great deals on poker-trip.de.

In the Facebook group, you’ll always find details and plenty of photos from the events; information about the tournaments is available on the website grandcasinoas.eu.
