The €530 + 70 Battle of Malta Main Event came to a close yesterday. Tereza Vernerova of the Czech Republic had already entered the final table with a clear lead and ultimately secured the victory, taking home €162,635 in prize money.
With 5,368 entries, the Main Event’s prize pool totaled €2,413,281, clearly surpassing the $1.5 million guarantee. The winner was originally set to receive a bonus of €227,835. The final eight players returned to the final table yesterday at Casino Malta. Tereza Vernerova held a chip lead of more than 2:1 over second-place Ofer Tadmor. But at the start of the final day, things didn’t go so smoothly for the Czech player at first. Her lead melted away after she lost a few smaller pots. After the dinner break, however, Vernerova returned refreshed and doubled her stack with a pair of kings, for example.
With three players remaining, they agreed to an ICM deal. At that point, Ofer Tadmor had the largest chip stack and received €175,000, while €22,635 was reserved for the eventual winner. In heads-up play, Vernerova doubled her stack in the first hand against Tadmor, thereby regaining the lead. In the final hand, Tadmor held
