The group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup is history – now begins the phase everyone has been waiting for. Welcome to the knockout round, where table calculators, goal differences, and crazy calculations are finally retired. From now on, there’s only one rule: Win or pack your bags. Those who lose will head home. That’s it. Over. End of the line.Of course, you will continue to receive my daily analyses and tips. Although I must admit with some self-criticism: 43 correct predictions out of 72 group matches is definitely too little for a self-proclaimed football expert. After all, there were seven exact hits at the end, and my form was definitely on the rise lately. At least there’s something to build on.Now, however, there are no more excuses. Every analysis must hit, every tip can decide between celebration or frustration. And that’s exactly what makes the knockout round so special: A brilliant day can make you a hero – a bad one sends you straight to the airport. I hope that at least my tips tend toward the former.
Potti’s Playoff Compass
With the knockout phase begins a new chapter in the World Cup diary. The section “What if…?” is saying goodbye, as the tournament tree is set. No more calculations, hoping, or guessing – now it’s only about what happens on the field. From now on, the new section is called “Potti’s Playoff Compass.” Together, we will take a look at the tournament tree before each match day, analyze the most exciting duels, categorize surprises, and venture – as usual with a touch of humor – to look ahead.Because now we enter the phase of a World Championship where legends are made, favorites fail, and every mistake can be the last. Or, to put it simply: Losing is forbidden!
But before we look at the first knockout game, let’s take a quick look back at the last decisions of the group stage.
Group L: Panama vs. England 0:2
England struggled for a long time against a fighting Panama team, but ultimately deservedly won 2:0. Jude Bellingham broke the deadlock and shortly after assisted Harry Kane’s goal. With this, the Three Lions secured first place in Group L and advanced to the knockout round.
Group L: Croatia vs. Ghana 2:1
Croatia secured second place in Group L with a hard-fought 2:1 victory over Ghana. Both teams now move on to the knockout round. Petar Sučić gave the Croatians a spectacular lead, but Ghana equalized after a VAR review. However, Nikola Vlašić scored the decisive header following a corner from Luka Modrić, clinching the celebrated winning goal. Whether Croatia can reach the semifinals yet again as they have in the past, I’m willing to doubt at this point. On the other hand: As long as Luka Modrić is on the field, one should never write off the Croatians.
Group K: Colombia vs. Portugal 0:0
No goals, but far from boring: Colombia and Portugal delivered an entertaining and fast-paced match with numerous scoring opportunities on both sides. Especially Colombia came closer to victory, but several times failed against the brilliantly positioned Diogo Costa. The 0:0 was enough for the South Americans to win the group, while Portugal advanced as the second-placed team. One thing is clear after this performance: These two teams could still make waves as the tournament progresses.
Group K: DR Congo vs. Uzbekistan 3:1
The DR Congo showed moral and turned an early deficit into a deserved 3:1 victory. With a strong finish, the Africans booked their ticket to the knockout round, where they will face England. Just reaching the playoffs is already a huge success – from now on, everything for the underdog is a bonus.
Group J: Algeria vs. Austria 3:3
Wow, that was close! The decision didn’t come until the sixth minute of stoppage time – and it couldn’t have been more dramatic. What many expected to be a tactical draw turned into a true World Cup spectacle. Algeria and the Austrian national team engaged in a thrilling exchange with six goals, changing leads, and plenty of emotions. With stoppage time already running, Sasa Kalajdžić headed home to equalize at 3:3, sending his team into the knockout round. In the end, there was double celebration: The Austrians advance as group runners-up, while Algeria also jumps to the playoffs as one of the best third-placed teams.
Group J: Jordan vs. Argentina 1:3
Even with a heavily rotated squad, Argentina didn’t leave anything to chance and won convincingly against Jordan 3:1. Giovani Lo Celso and Lautaro Martínez established a clear lead early, before substitute Lionel Messi capped it off with a stunning free kick after coming on. The defending champions concluded the group stage with the maximum of three wins, thereby reinforcing their ambitions for a successful title defense.
Upcoming Matches (Today there is only one match)
Round of 16: South Africa vs. Canada – 9 PM
This duel wouldn’t have been on anyone’s radar before the World Cup. I certainly didn’t see it coming. South Africa silenced all critics with their historic advancement to the knockout round and gave a pretty clear response to self-proclaimed football experts. The “Bafana Bafana”, who were written off in many places before the tournament, now stand among the last 32 teams – and continue to dream.Canada enters the match slightly favored as co-host, but that could be dangerous. South Africa has nothing to lose, plays boldly, disciplined, and now believes in the next football fairy tale. Still, I think Canada’s individual quality – driven by their home fans – will narrowly prevail in the end.
My Tip: Canada wins a thrilling and entertaining match with
2:1. The host celebrates – and South Africa leaves the tournament with their heads held high.
