Potti's World Cup Diary

Potti’s World Cup Diary #9: Swiss Party & Canadian Shooting Festival

The second match day has begun – and our neighbors from Switzerland can breathe a sigh of relief for now. Thanks to the late offensive fireworks against Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Swiss are already one foot in the playoffs. The hosts, Canada and Mexico, are also getting into the World Cup spirit and have put themselves in an excellent position. From today, I will also occasionally take a look at potential knockout matches. As it stands right now, Germany would meet Morocco in the first round. Sounds exciting. However, only 28 out of 72 group stage matches have been completed. In this World Cup, it feels like a single match day can completely turn all tables and predictions upside down.Group A: Czech Republic vs. South Africa 1:1 This match was about as thrilling as a trip to the DMV on a Tuesday morning. The Czech Republic took an early lead and then seemed to decide that 80 minutes of defending would be enough. South Africa tried hard but struggled to find offensive solutions for a long time. It was only a penalty kick that brought the deserved equalizer. In the closing stage, both teams suddenly wanted to win, with South Africa even coming a bit closer to taking the lead. In the end, it finished 1:1, which both teams will likely regret. At least the hope of advancing remains alive. Both now need to win in their last game.Group B: Switzerland vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina 4:1 For a long time, it looked like a tough evening for Switzerland. Then came substitute Johan Manzambi – and suddenly it was party time. The Freiburg player completely turned the match around after his substitution and was a big part of the reason the Swiss pulled ahead 4:1 in the final phase. The last 20 minutes were particularly entertaining. While Bosnia ran out of steam after a strong fight, Switzerland really turned up the heat. There was clearly no sign of the allegedly toxic atmosphere in the Swiss team after the goal celebrations. For Switzerland, these are three crucial points in the race for the playoffs – and for Manzambi, probably the end of his substitute role. For Bosnia and Herzegovina, it’s not a disaster yet, because a win against Qatar in the last group match keeps the knockout phase reachable on their own terms.Group B: Canada vs. Qatar 6:0 Canada shot Qatar out of the stadium with a 6:0 victory, impressively showing that they can not only host this World Cup but also play pretty solid soccer. Jonathan David scored three times and ended his goal drought in the most spectacular way imaginable. After the fourth goal, the match resembled a better training session. For Qatar, the situation in the group has now become extremely unpleasant. The Canadians, on the other hand, can already dream of finishing first in the group. And rightfully so.Group A: Mexico vs. South Korea 1:0 Mexico has also won its second group match and is now confirmed as the group winner. The deciding goal came after a major blunder from South Korea’s goalkeeper Kim Seung-Gyu, who practically gifted Luis Romo the goal on a silver platter. Mexico did not play exceptionally well but was effective, as one must be at a home World Cup. The South Koreans fought back and even had a chance for the equalizer shortly before the end. But Mexico’s keeper Raúl Rangel saved the win with a spectacular double save. In short: Mexico is through, the fans celebrate, and all of Mexico is already dreaming of a World Cup fairy tale. South Korea, on the other hand, will likely kindly but firmly recommend their goalkeeper to avoid watching the highlights of this match again.

Upcoming Matches

Group D: USA vs. Australia – 9:00 PM Both teams have won their opening match and can secure first place in the group with another win. The loser, however, may have to do some calculations and is not 100% guaranteed to advance. The USA impressed offensively, while Australia was strong defensively. This sounds like a tight affair. In our tipping contest, we hope to gain some ground with our 2:2 prediction.Group C: Scotland vs. Morocco – 12:00 AM Both teams earned points in their opener and know that a win guarantees advancement. I expect significantly less risk than passion and a game that will please tactical coaches while neutral spectators occasionally check their phones. As a big Scotland fan, I look forward to the national anthem and the fans’ chants. My tip: 1:1.Group C: Brazil vs. Haiti – 3:00 AM For Brazil, the situation is surprisingly simple: after the 1:1 against Morocco, anything short of a victory would be a major disaster. Haiti, on the other hand, can play completely freely. No one expects anything from them, and that unpredictability makes the underdogs so dangerous in this World Cup right now. The Brazilians will hope to take the lead as early as possible; otherwise, the whole country will be nervous by the hour mark. My prediction: Nothing to worry about here. Brazil wins easily with 3:0.Group D: Turkey vs. Paraguay – 6:00 AM Both teams have a lot at stake. After their opening losses, another point drop would be about as helpful as an umbrella with a hole in it. The winner keeps their World Cup hopes alive, while the loser may start thinking about scenarios. I expect a tense match with a lot of intensity, some discussions, and at least three players who will look like they need to be substituted after a foul – only to sprint 30 seconds later. Turkey wins 2:1. At least that’s what my gut feeling says.
